Guided Local Area Day Climbs

When you book a guided day with ALPS, we custom design a fun, safe, and exciting climbing outing tailored specifically to your needs based on your experience level, fitness and desired learning outcomes. This is by far the most popular type of booking and the ideal way to get the most out of a guided day whether you are trying climbing for the first time, are transitioning from gym climbing to outdoor climbing or are already an experienced climber looking to optimize your time out on the rock. ALL necessary equipment including rock shoes, harness and helmets are included

Intro to Rock Climbing
A great way for you, you and a group or friends or your family to try the sport of rock climbing in a safe and supportive atmosphere. You’ll be introduced to the fundamental climbing skills while enjoying plenty of climbing time on routes that will be challenging, fun, and rewarding. We provide ALL necessary equipment.
“Gym to Crag” Clinic
Specifically designed for the gym climber looking to venture outside. Participants should have the basic skills required to climb indoors: tie in to a harness, top-rope belay, understanding of basic climbing movement. The clinic will cover crag safety, leading bolted sport routes to set up top ropes, anchor systems, cleaning an anchor to be lowered or rappel. We provide ALL necessary equipment.
Climb Safe Clinic
This course provides information on up to date techniques and technical systems to maximize safety and efficiency. There are no prerequisites. Climb Safe is heavily weighted on mastering the essential components necessary to safely operate at a single pitch cliff. The day consists of ground level review and instruction along with practical application of skills on the rock. We provide ALL necessary equipment.
Basic Top Rope Setup (2 Day Course)
This class is based on the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor curriculum but “guide specific” techniques have been modified or removed in order to tailor the curriculum to recreational climbers’ needs. We review equipment, knots, a wide variety of anchor systems, belaying and rappelling. This Two Day course is designed so graduate participants can safely and efficiently set up various top rope climbs in a non-guiding capacity. There are many top rope accessible cliff areas and the ability to safely set up top rope climbs opens up a wide variety of climbing routes. This is an excellent course for anyone who would like to be able to safely access and set-up climbing routes and rappels with or without having to lead climb.

Trad Lead/Anchors Course
designed to take the gym or top rope or sport climber and introduce them to the basic skills necessary to safely and effectively transition to traditional lead climbing. Students will learn how to place and evaluate traditional climbing protection in the construction of a climbing “anchor” and in the context of protecting a climber on a lead climb. Participants are NOT required to lead climb. This is an entry level course heavily weighted on ground level practice and mock leading(top rope back-up).
Prerequisites: None, but students with very limited outdoor climbing experience should consider attending a Gym-To-Crag or Climb Safe Clinic before taking this course.

Trad Lead II
A course for the climber who has either successfully completed the Trad lead/Anchors Course or who already possesses a solid understanding of traditional protection. This course will teach traditional lead climbing techniques applicable to single pitch routes and how the overall climbing system works to protect the climber and second. While some of the skills and techniques will be reviewed at ground level this is primarily an active climbing day.
Prerequisites: Complete the Anchors course or be able to demonstrate a solid understanding of basic knots, ability to place and evaluate passive and active protection. Have the ability to comfortably climb(on top rope) face and crack climbs rated at the 5.8 level.

Trad Lead III
Covers skills and techniques for leading multipitch trad climbs. We will address equipment selection and climbing strategy, construction of appropriate anchors, belaying techniques, station and rope management, routefinding, time management and critical decision making skills. This is an active climbing day on multipitch terrain followed by a ground level review and debrief.
Prerequisites: Completion of the Trad I course or demonstrate a solid understanding of anchor construction. Ability to lead traditionally protected face and crack climbs rated 5.8 in difficulty and a fitness level appropriate to operating on multi-pitch terrain.

Basic Rescue/Self Rescue Clinic
Teaches the recreational climber to evaluate various scenarios in order to determine a best course of action. Skills taught include: knots and hitches, belay escapes, improvised ascending and descending techniques, knot passes, raises and lowers, rescue rappels and pick-offs.
Prerequisites: Able to comfortably toprope face and crack climbs rated 5.6 in difficulty. Solid belaying skills , working knowledge of basic climbing knots and anchoring systems.

Boy Scouts of America Climbing
And merit badge testing. We adhere to the “Climb On Safely” and “Topping Out” protocol of National Project COPE and the Climbing/Rappelling Standards set forth by the BSA. Scouts and attendant adults will learn safe climbing and rappelling practices and techniques and will be afforded the opportunity to climb and rappel on a variety of terrain challenges in a fun and safe educational atmosphere. Full day and multi-day options available. Group discounts apply.

Military & Law Enforcement
Customized training available. We have successfully worked with local, state and federal law enforcement, emergency first responders, and various units and personnel from all four branches of the military.
TV & Motion Picture Industry
We provide high angle rigging services for specialty camera and lighting systems, safety coordination, climbing related stunt work, and more. Our clients include major TV Networks and motion picture studios, sports organizations including the Summer and Winter Olympics and World Cup soccer.

We do climbing photography assignment work and rigging. Our work has been featured in numerous national publications including Alpinist Magazine, Climbing Magazine. Nat Geo Adventure Magazine, Rock & Ice magazine, Gripped, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, The Dixie Cragger’s Atlas series of guidebooks, and many many more regional and local publications.
